Should Your Business Website have a Blog?

toblogg

Before we jump into talking about adding a business blog for your website you need to make sure you have a decent website first. If your website is over 3 or 4 years old you need to hire a website developer to replace it. Why? Because smart phones have changed the world and older websites need to be rebuilt to make them mobile friendly. So make sure you have a quality, responsive website before you start worrying about your blog.

Creating a web blog can be a fun and rewarding way for you to talk about your business and trends in your industry. A good business website blog can provide a number of benefits. Besides being a way to express your opinion and even vent your inner emotions, a good blog can educate your readers and even inspire them with your brilliant ideas and contributions. Virtually every company has a website these days. In this age of smart phones and mobile technology there are still old websites that are relics from days gone by. In other words, some companies still have clunker websites that are not mobile friendly and need to be rebuilt with new responsive web technology. If you’re the owner of one of those antique websites, the good news is you can step up to advanced technology that will make your website “mobile friendly” and easy to blog on. New versions of content management platforms like WordPress and Drupal make adding a blog and posting blog articles a cinch.

But why should your business do a blog?

A business website blog can provide a number of benefits for your company and having a blog in your website is something you should talk to your webmaster about. But perhaps YOU are not the right person to do the blogging for your business because you’re too busy or not much of a writer or whatever. So what do you do? In that case, you should consider hiring your webmaster or even a professional content writer that has the brains and experience to quickly understand your business and write articles about things that will positively impact your client base. A good blog will often inspire customers to contact you because of ideas or information shared about products or services shared directly from specific blog posts. A good blog needs to be updated on some kind of regular basis…the more often, the better.

Talk about What you Do or Sell

If you’re in the services industry you can talk about some projects you’ve worked on, discussing the accomplishments and challenges you had to tackle to get those jobs done. These blogs are very interesting to someone who is facing the same issues or in need of these types of services. For instance, if you a Denver web developer and you just built a new, mobile friendly website for a large company, you can talk about that project and perhaps throw in a testimonial. Sometimes a web developer has to take over a difficult project that that has been mismanaged and poorly handled by another web company. We’ve found ourselves helping companies out in these situations and the excitement and positive feedback can be tremendous when you finsh a job like that! If you’re selling products, then you can talk about featured products and any sales or new items you might want to feature. For product based websites you might consider having your web developer build your site using WordPress and WooCommerce. This is a very powerful combination of technology which provides for a wide range of options and has advanced modules that make ecommerce much easier to manage and deal with compare to some older technologies.

A Good blog builds Credibility

As we’ve been talking about, a blog that speaks knowledgeably about various topics provides “proof” that you are an expert in your field and worthy of consideration as a consultant or to be hired. Chances are that because you’re a business owner, you’re an expert of some type. You have expertise and experience other people don’t and can easily share some tips and ideas with your audience through your blog. Because your an expert at what you do, think about the all the knowldege, tips and topics that might be valuable to share with your customers and clients through a blog.

Blog for SEO

Anytime you add text-rich pages to your website, you’re giving Google more information and valuable content to index. Your topics help “educate” Google on what your website is about and why you deserve a higher ranking. Once again, WordPress is a great platfrom for blogging and webmasters have long used WordPress and blogs to help their clients achieve top ten search results on Google’s first page. But keep in mind that your blogs need to be related to what you do. You shouldn’t blog about politics, fear of snakes and golf and hope you’re getting ranked for plumbing products. Any decent webmaster who has experience with SEO would tell you to blog about what you’re trying to rank for.

Share Ideas and Opinions

Unless your the dullest person on the planet, you probably have opinions. A blog is a great place to share your opinions, especially in regards to trends in your industry and products or services you have to offer. For instance, there is a proliferation of cheap DIY website builders. Anyone can build a website for almost nothing…maybe $50-$100 a year. But what do we see? We have plenty of companies coming to us, crying on our shoulder that their website stinks and “can we help them” with their piece of junk website? Most of these companies did not think through their decision to make their own website. They were lured in by the low price and the idea that they could get something amazing and wonderful for dirt cheap. The sad reality is that these things rarely work well or look good. The fact of the matter is that your business website can easily be the most important marketing resource for your businessness. Does it make sense to spend the least money possible on the most important marketing resource? What usually happens when you spend the least amount of money possible on anything…such as a car…or a house. You get junk and usually that car or house needs so much work to make it better that you’re better off spending “real money” and getting a decent car or house. This is one of those lessons in life that somehow business owners don’t always think through. Instead of spending almost nothing on your website you should INVEST in making a great website…one that has a killer blog, is mobile friendly and can be easily found online through major search engines like Google. When companies we work with do that, guess what happens? They make tons of money…way more than the cost of their website and all the related web work. What’s nice for them too is they don’t need to worry about their website because they have a webmaster who knows what they’re doing. But hey…this is just our expert opinion. You might want to think about it before you go squander your money on some DIY website junk. But it’s also an example of sharing an opinion based on knowledge and expertise and incorporating that into a little blog article like this.

Be Consistent

If you have a blog you don’t want to be the guy that has one blog and nothing else for 5 years. Don’t bother having a blog if that’s what you’re going to do. If you can put a blog post out every couple of weeks or every month that’s something that you should shoot for. As we’ve said before, you have special expertise that your customers probably would enjoy reading about in a blog post. Have fun writing blogs and don’t forget to be consistent and put one out every so often. This will keep people coming back for more and help you grow your business and add supporters who might share your posts through social media.

Bottom line…grab a cup of coffee and get your blog on.
